CONGRESSMAN BURTON URGES SUPPORT FOR U.S.-KOREAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT
(WASHINGTON, JUNE 14, 2006) U.S. Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) this week expressed his support for negotiations toward a U.S-Korea free trade agreement (FTA). His remarks, emphasizing the significance of a new partnership between the two countries, appeared in the Congressional Record on June 13.

NEW UGANDAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO PRESIDENT BUSH
(WASHINGTON, MAY 15, 2006) In a White House ceremony on May 15, the new Ugandan Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Perezi Kamunanwire, presented his credentials to President George W. Bush.
Ambassador Kamunanwire previously served as his country’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York (1988-96) and as ambassador to Germany (1986-88).
Upon presenting his credentials to President Bush, Ambassador Kamunanwire said: “The United States and Uganda share many things in common. We are both multicultural democracies characterized by respect for the rule of law and for the dignity of every individual. We both seek to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS and assure that future generations are free from this threat to health and well-being. We are allies in the war on terrorism.”
Last month, the U.S. Department of State’s most recent annual Country Reports on Terrorism noted that during 2005, “Uganda had a strong regional voice in opposing international terrorism and supported U.S. counterterrorism initiatives.”

FEDERER TOP ATHLETE; ARMSTRONG, PATRICK TOP USSA ONLINE VOTING
(DAPHNE, Alabama, December 26, 2005) Tennis champion Roger Federer of Switzerland was the top overall vote getter and was named the 2005 Outstanding Athlete of the Year by the United States Sports Academy after a world-wide internet election hosted by USATODAY.com.
Lance Armstrong was named Male Athlete of the Year for the second straight year, while race car driver Danica Patrick was named Female Athlete of the Year. Female voters outnumbered male voters by a 2-to-1 ratio during the first week of voting in an election that ran from Dec. 1-24. This gave Patrick a lead she would not relinquish. Overall, the ballot received tens of thousands of votes from sports fans around the globe.
The Athlete of the Year is the culmination of the Sports Academy’s yearlong Athlete of the Month program, which recognizes the accomplishments of men and women in any sport around the globe on a monthly basis. USSA holds online voting for the Athlete of the Month in which an international voting committee comprised of former athletes, media, sports organizations and governing bodies.

USSA PRESIDENT PRESENTS EAGLE AWARD TO AOL FOUNDER KIMSEY
(DAPHNE, Alabama, December 19, 2005) United States Sports Academy President Thomas P. Rosandich presented James Kimsey, founder of America Online, in Washington, D.C. with the Academy’s 2005 Eagle Award.
As part of the Sports Academy’s Awards of Sport, the Eagle Award is presented annually to a world leader in sport to recognize that individual’s contributions in promoting international harmony, peace and goodwill through the effective use of sport.
As a member of the Washington Baseball Club, Kimsey successfully helped relocate the Montreal Expos to Washington, D.C., giving the nation’s capital a franchise in our national pastime for the first time since the Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers in 1972. The Expos had by far the worst attendance in baseball in 2004, averaging 9,356 fans per game. In their first year in Washington, the Nationals averaged 33,651, 11th in Major League Baseball and fifth in the National League. The players responded by improving their record by 14 games, from 67-95 to 81-81.

BUNNING’S STAND ON DRUGS IN SPORT EARNS HIM USSA EAGLE AWARD
(DAPHNE, Alabama, December 16, 2005) U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), whose threat of congressional intervention led to a stronger stance against drugs in Major League Baseball, has been named the 2006 Eagle Award Winner by the United States Sports Academy.
The Eagle Award is presented annually to a world leader in sport to recognize that individual’s contributions in promoting international harmony, peace and goodwill through the effective use of sport.
In early November, Bunning and U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) re-introduced bipartisan legislation that would impose tough new drug testing policies and penalties on professional sports teams. Bunning, a founding member of the Major League Baseball Player’s Association and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, was dissatisfied with efforts by unions and management in professional sports’ to work out agreements on stronger drug testing policies. He and McCain believed legislation was necessary.

NEW SWAZI AMBASSADOR MEETS WITH KEY CONGRESSIONAL LEADER
(WASHINGTON, NOVEMBER 10, 2005) His Excellency Ephraim M. Hlophe, who recently arrived in Washington as the new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Swaziland to the United States, met on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, November 9, with Representative Christopher Smith, chairman of the House International Relations Committee’s subcommittee on Africa, Global Human Rights, and International Operations.
Ambassador Hlophe and Chairman Smith had a wide-ranging conversation that included several topics of importance to both Swaziland and the United States, including trade and investment issues and the recently passed amendments to the Industrial Relations Act, which were drafted with the assistance of the International Labor Organization and strengthened Swaziland’s Commission for Mediation, Arbitration, and Conciliation (CMAC).
Because the global fight against HIV/AIDS is of particular importance to Chairman Smith, he and the Ambassador discussed at length His Majesty King Mswati III’s efforts to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS through tested methods of abstinence, marital fidelity, and condom use (the so-called “ABC” solution). Ambassador Hlophe told Chairman Smith that King Mswati is closely studying the Ugandan model for combating HIV/AIDS.

NEW SWAZI AMBASSADOR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO PRESIDENT BUSH
(WASHINGTON, OCTOBER 6, 2005) His Excellency Ephraim M. Hlophe, the new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Swaziland to the United States, presented his credentials to President George W. Bush at the White House on Monday, October 3.
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Ambassador Hlophe was principal secretary for the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, and has served as Swaziland’s National Contact Point for the Southern African Development Community and as a member of the Swaziland Investment Promotion Authority (SIPA).
Ambassador Hlophe said that he hopes to see “increased attention in the United States toward trade and investment opportunities in Swaziland. Our country welcomes American firms to explore the many possibilities Swaziland has to offer in mining, tourism, manufacturing, agribusiness, and international services.”
Swaziland, Ambassador Hlophe said, “is working with the United States in developing an investment code, and the United States is working with the Swaziland Investment Promotion Authority to help attract foreign investment. We appreciate the work USAID is doing to develop an ‘investor road map’ to identify barriers to foreign investment and to form the basis of a new investment code.”

CAUCUS ON UGANDA LAUNCHED, MEETS UGANDAN PRESIDENT ON CAPITOL HILL
(SEPTEMBER 28, 2005) Members of the new Congressional Caucus on Uganda met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday, September 21, to discuss U.S.-Ugandan relations, the two countries' shared commitment to fighting terrorism, and Uganda's leadership in reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
President Museveni, who was in the United States to attend the opening of the United Nations General Assembly as well as for private meetings with U.S. government officials in Washington, expressed his appreciation to the Members of Congress whose interest in Uganda led to the creation of the Caucus:
"The relationship between the United States and Uganda is strong and productive. We have goals in common, including the eradication of HIV/AIDS, rooting out and destroying terrorists wherever they may be found, and creating the conditions for continued economic growth in Africa. NEW YORK CONGRESSMAN EXPRESSES APPRECIATION TOWARD REPUBLIC OF KOREA

KATRINA EXPERIENCE SHOWS VALUE OF INTEROPERABLE COMMUNICATIONS, SHIPCOM SAYS
(MOBILE, SEPTEMBER 26, 2005) The experience of operating its equipment during the stressful conditions that accompanied Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath demonstrated the strengths of a new interoperability system developed by ShipCom LLC, a Mobile, Alabama-based company that specializes in ship-to- shore and emergency communications.
According to Rene Stiegler, president of ShipCom and also of the Interoperability Technologies Group (ITG), "Prior to, during and following Katrina’s assault the Gulf Coast, ShipCom and the Interoperability Technology Group implemented their Smart Network Platform (SNP) interoperability solution and provided the needed seamless communication links among local, state, and federal agencies and other emergency services.
Stiegler said the agencies that benefited from the SNP included FEMA, the Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, FBI, and state and local law enforcement and emergency management agencies in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

KOREA PLEDGES $30 MILLION TO HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF EFFORTS
(WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 9, 2005) With some 90 countries and nongovernmental bodies around the world committed to helping restore the U.S. Gulf Coast region in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Korea, with its pledge of $30 million in cash and the dispatch of a rescue team, is the fourth largest donor to America's relief and recovery efforts.
The top three donors are Middle East oil producers, according to the U.S. Department of State on Sept. 6. Kuwait has offered $400 million in oil products plus $100 million in cash, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, which committed $100 million each.
Korea was ahead of Japan and major advanced European countries in terms of the level of donation: key U.S. ally Japan's consists of $1 million in cash and relief goods such as generators and tents. Elsewhere in Asia, Australia contributed $10 million, most of the money through the U.S. Red Cross, China, $5.1 million and relief goods, and India, $5 million, respectively.

UGANDA PLEDGES $200,000 TO HURRICANE RELIEF
(WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 8, 2005) The government of the Republic of Uganda has pledged $200,000 toward relief and rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Ugandan Minister of Foreign Affairs Sam Kutesa said the money will be donated to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, led by former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. “The Government of Uganda extends its sympathies to the people affected by Hurricane Katrina,” said Minister Kutesa.
“We know that, under the guidance of the two former presidents, money collected by the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund will go where it is needed most and where it can be used best,” said Kutesa, who is in Washington on previously-scheduled business.

SHIPCOM ASSISTS COAST GUARD IN EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS, RESCUE OPERATIONS
(MOBILE, SEPTEMBER 7, 2005) ShipCom LLC, which operates radio station WLO for ship-to-shore communications, made its facilities available during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath to the Coast Guard and other emergency agencies.
“Shortly after the worst of the storm passed us on Monday afternoon, we received a telephone call from the Coast Guard’s ATC [Aviation Training Center] Mobile, informing us that the roof was damaged over their operations center and they had lost all communication capability with their assets,” reported ShipCom president Rene Stiegler. “In response, ShipCom prepared a VHF radio, power supply, and emergency antenna , transporting it to ATC Mobile. With this radio, ATC could communicate with ShipCom.”
Using ShipCom’s advanced interoperability systems, Stiegler said “we took over all communications for over 24 hours, relaying hundreds if not thousands of messages from aircraft back to ATC Mobile,” which had been chosen as the main staging site largely because it was the closest suitable facility to the worst of the storm-stricken area.

CONGRESSMAN DAN BURTON URGES NEW EMPHASIS ON U.S.-KOREA ALLIANCE
(WASHINGTON, JULY 13, 2005) In an effort to reaffirm the strategic importance of the U.S.-Korea bilateral relationship, U.S. Representative Dan Burton (R-Indiana), vice-chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific of the House International Relations Committee, circulated a letter to his colleagues on Capitol Hill this week, bringing their attention to an alliance that is sometimes overlooked.
Entitled "America's Forgotten Alliance," Burton's letter highlights the major policy contributions and achievements made by South Korea as a result of the long alliance between it and the United States, characterizing the relationship as "one of our most vital and vibrant partnerships politically, militarily and economically." He further stated that "South Korea remains one of America's most important strategic partners in East Asia."
As a trading partner, Burton noted that South Korea ranks seventh among the United States' largest export markets and fifth among markets for U.S. agricultural products. Accordingly, he states that South Korea would make "an excellent candidate for consideration of U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations."

U.S. CONGRESSMEN PRAISE KIBAKI AS U.S. ALLY IN TERROR WAR AND AS CORRUPTION FIGHTER
(WASHINGTON, JUNE 13, 2005) Four leading members of the U.S. Congress have sent a letter to Kenya's President, Mwai Kibaki, noting that "Kenya is an important regional partner of the United States and a key ally in the global war on terror."
The letter is signed by Representatives Dan Burton (R-Indiana), chairman of the House International Relations Committee's subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere; Steve Chabot (R-Ohio), vice chairman of the Committee's subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia; Eliot Engel (D-New York), vice chairman of the congressional Homeland Security Task Force; and Edolphus Towns (D-New York), ranking member of the subcommittee on Government Efficiency and Financial Management of the House Committee on Government Reform.
The congressmen tell President Kibaki that they "have been pleased by Kenya's leadership in bringing peace and stability to the East African region, most notably by your sponsorship of peace talks to find a settlement in Somalia after 30 years of conflict and chaos, and by your leadership in the regional efforts to bring peace to troubled Sudan."
