NEW
SWAZI AMBASSADOR MEETS WITH KEY CONGRESSIONAL LEADER
(WASHINGTON,
NOVEMBER 10, 2005) His Excellency Ephraim M. Hlophe,
who recently arrived in Washington as the new Ambassador of the Kingdom
of Swaziland to the United States, met on Capitol Hill on Wednesday,
November 9, with Representative Christopher Smith, chairman of the
House International Relations Committee’s subcommittee on Africa,
Global Human Rights, and International Operations.
Ambassador Hlophe and Chairman Smith had a wide-ranging conversation
that included several topics of importance to both Swaziland and the
United States, including trade and investment issues and the recently
passed amendments to the Industrial Relations Act, which were drafted
with the assistance of the International Labor Organization and strengthened
Swaziland’s Commission for Mediation, Arbitration, and Conciliation
(CMAC).
Because the global fight against HIV/AIDS is of particular importance
to Chairman Smith, he and the Ambassador discussed at length His Majesty
King Mswati III’s efforts to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS through
tested methods of abstinence, marital fidelity, and condom use (the
so-called “ABC” solution). Ambassador Hlophe told Chairman
Smith that King Mswati is closely studying the Ugandan model for combating
HIV/AIDS.
Chairman Smith sent his personal greetings to King Mswati and said
that he hopes to visit Swaziland in the near future. He said his top
foreign policy aide, Mr. Gregory Simpkins, will travel to Swaziland
before the end of this year.
Both Ambassador Hlophe and Chairman Smith agreed that their meeting
was friendly and productive, and they hope to continue to meet on
a regular basis in the months to come.
