CONGRESSIONAL
CAUCUS ON UGANDA LAUNCHED, MEETS UGANDAN PRESIDENT ON CAPITOL HILL
(WASHINGTON,
SEPTEMBER 28, 2005) Members
of the new Congressional Caucus on Uganda met with Ugandan President
Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday, September 21, to discuss U.S.-Ugandan
relations, the two countries' shared commitment to fighting terrorism,
and Uganda's leadership in reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
President Museveni, who was in the United States to attend the opening
of the United Nations General Assembly as well as for private meetings
with U.S. government officials in Washington, expressed his appreciation
to the Members of Congress whose interest in Uganda led to the creation
of the Caucus:
"The relationship between the United States and Uganda is strong
and productive. We have goals in common, including the eradication
of HIV/AIDS, rooting out and destroying terrorists wherever they may
be found, and creating the conditions for continued economic growth
in Africa. The Congressional Caucus on Uganda is a welcome partner
for exploring and promoting Uganda's friendship with the United States."
Representative
Christopher Smith (R-N.J.), who co-chairs the Congressional Caucus
on Uganda, said:
"I was honored to have the opportunity to meet with President
Museveni and continue our great friendship. We had an open and productive
exchange of ideas and I am grateful for the leading role that President
Museveni has assumed with the worldwide effort to combat HIV/AIDS."
Caucus co-chair Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) stated in the Congressional
Record on September 19, in a speech thanking Uganda for its contribution
to post-Katrina relief efforts:
"It recently became my pleasure to become the co-chair of the
Congressional Caucus on Uganda. I encourage all Members of this body
to consider joining the caucus so that they can study more closely
the U.S.-Ugandan bilateral relationship and learn more about how Uganda
and the United States can work together on matters of mutual concern."
Other members of the Congressional Caucus on Uganda include Representatives
Rob Andrews, Tim Bishop, John Boozman, Sherrod Brown, Dan Burton,
Ken Calvert, Eliot Engel, Jeff Fortenberry, Paul E. Gillmor, Dave
